Chapter Fourteen: Rhythm of the Night "Seriously, Fynn, what the hell just happened?" Jack repeated.

"And I seriously have no clue." I stared at the card. "Something weird. Then, my whole life has turned into The XFiles so...I should have expected there was some weird government agency that knows all about the supernatural."

Michael.

"More importantly, there's something I need to show you," I headed out of the room. "You aren't going to believe me if I tell you, so just follow me."

"Okay." His voice was heavy with suspicion. "Lead on. But after this I'm taking you home. Seriously, you need to shower."

"Okay." I agreed to keep the momentum. We took the elevator up to long term care, and I headed back to the room in question with little resistance from the staff. What happened last night? I was more than a little fuzzy.

I went inside the room, and for a brief moment before I saw my brother's face, I was sure I'd been dreaming and when I went inside he wouldn't be there.

But he was.

"Holy Mother of God," Jack swore. "That's..."

"Michael, my supposedly dead twin brother."

"Well. That's...do your parents know?"

"He was admitted twelve years ago as John Smith." I clenched my jaw. "I honestly don't know if they know or not. But I'm going to find out."

"You should shower first."

I sniffed my shirt and nodded in agreement. "Okay."

He gave me a very long look, leaned forward, and planted a kiss on my cheek. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For doubting you. Come on, I'll take you to my place. My clothes will fit you...with a belt," he glanced at my waist. "You've lost weight."

"I know."

"You ready?"

"I...I don't want to leave him alone again." I sighed.

"I'll have someone keep an eye on him," Jack promised. "Let's go. You're going to fall asleep standing up and we still need to get you into the shower." He took hold of my arm. "I won't let anything happen to him, I promise."

"Thank you."

He managed a wry sort of smile and steered me out of the room.

* * * *

I was way too tired to be thinking about anything, but I had a lot to think about. Voight's weirdness, the possible capture of the spirit that had been causing all my problems, and then there was my not-dead comatose twin brother who'd apparently been hanging around for the last twelve years under an assumed name—and who the hell knew who'd been paying for his treatment.

Jack drove moderately less insanely than usual in order to prevent me from hysterics in my sleep-deprived state, hustled me into his apartment and then into the shower with very few words before heading across the hall to pick up Tara.

I showered, and the feel of hot water on my skin was just amazing. It felt illegally good just then, and managed to perk me up enough that I was able to shave and dress myself without accident.

When I came out of the bathroom, Tara was sitting in the living room and Jack was in the kitchen making coffee.
